Happy 100th, Jean!

Cheers ... centenarian Jean Levin enjoying a well-deserved glass of wine.

Our dear friend, Jean Levin, has just reached her 100th birthday. What an achievement! What an accomplishment! What a glorious occasion! What a blessing! What an example and inspiration you are Jean to the rest of us. Sound of mind and body, you show us - not by words but in your actions - how to make each day count and how to live life to the fullest.

Born on November 3, 1915 in London, Jean, a qualified librarian, came on aliyah in 1985 together with her husband Percy, a furniture manufacturer in Hackney, England, Jean had met Percy at drama classes in Morley College where he wrote sketches and plays and where she acted. They were married in 1949 and raised two children - a daughter, Susan, born in 1950, and a son, Mark, born in 1954.

No slacker, Jean lives a very busy, interesting and fulfilling life. She is an avid reader, has fantastic retention and remembers exactly what she reads; she makes quick work of her daily crossword puzzles; she is also totally up-to-date on world events and is completely computer literate.

Jean is also an accomplished knitter, and has made stunning sweaters for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren using the most beautiful and intricate patterns.

She is intensely interested in archaeology and has regularly attended archaeology lectures at Tel Aviv University for many years, even traveling to these lectures by public transport.

She avidly follows tennis matches at Wimbledon and other world championships. Also a lover of classical music and especially opera, together, she and I have enjoyed watching many great opera performances broadcast from the Metropolitan Opera stage.

For several years Jean was the chairperson of our ESRA Golden Friendship Club where she introduced us to play-reading and with her help and instruction we "staged" several delightful performances.

Totally belying her age, Jean walks at a clip leaving many a younger person behind.

One of Jean's granddaughters had suggested celebrating her grandmother's 100th birthday by going on a safari, but in the end she decided to celebrate in a less exotic way. Jean, we would like to wish you a very happy 100th birthday. A very hearty mazal tov.
