Splendour in the Grass

Illustration: Denis Shifrin

Jackie walked very slowly towards his Granny's retirement home. He wasn't in a good mood at all. His head was aching from the school's disco party the night before, but his father had insisted that he should take Gran out otherwise he wouldn't get his promised birthday present. He liked his Gran but he wasn't in a patient mood today.

Gran's face lit up when she saw him; she was always glad to see him and said his bright blue tee shirt cheered her up. She was waiting for him just inside the retirement home, dressed in her warm coat, all ready to go out for her walk.

"How lovely it is to walk in the park," she said, "and the perfume is so refreshing!"

"What perfume?" he said (thinking to himself, what's the old girl talking about - she must be imagining some of her bygone days).

"Oh," she said, "the fresh grass of course - it's just been cut. I wonder why someone never thought of bottling the aroma," she smiled.

Jackie took a deep breath and felt his head clear quite suddenly.

"Yes, Gran, it certainly is great to be out with you!"
