New Trio To Lead in Modiin

t's all change at ESRA Modiin with a trio of new leaders taking the helm: Chair Evelynne Cherny and Vice- Chairs Judy Golub and Linda Slutzky.

In a joint statement they wrote: "We would like to thank the ESRA Modiin Committee for their vote of confidence in us.

"We are excited about the opportunity and look forward to working with the committee and all our members to strengthen our vibrant and vital organization. Together we can go from strength to strength."

They stressed the importance of members' ideas, suggestions, feedback and participation. "We look forward to hearing from you and working with you always," they added.

Said Evelynne: "I see the future as exciting. Together with our committee and the support of members we hope we shall be able to continue to achieve our goals."

Commented Linda: "I look forward to working closely with the leadership and full membership of ESRA to expand our projects, maintain the effective and successful programs already put in place by the able leadership to date, develop and take advantage of the varied talent and ideas of all ESRA members, and create worthwhile and enjoyable programs for all of us."

Judy said: "We look forward to hearing from you and working with you always."

ESRA Chairman Baruch Tanaman wrote of the appointments: "We congratulate the new Chair and Vice-Chairs and wish them every success as they usher in a new era for ESRA Modiin.

"Building on the strong foundation established by previous Chairpersons Cynthia Barmor and Jackie Klein, the new leadership will continue Modiin's record of growth and community service."

Evelynne Cherny

After marrying and having two children, Evelynne became President of the Ladies' Auxiliary in her synagogue in Sydney, Australia.

Later, she followed her husband and joined B'nai B'rith, but when that Chapter and Lodge disintegrated she took up the challenge and became Charter President of a new Chapter. She served as President four times over 30 years.

Funds were raised for Jewish and non-Jewish projects, and a donation was also given to ESRA Modiin for Neve ESRA.

Widowed in 2011, Evelynne made aliyah in 2013. For the first year she set about learning Ivrit, but admits that "it's not good."

She then joined both ESRA and Hadassah in Modiin, "but the pull of ESRA was stronger, and I have been a committee member for four years."

Judy Golub

Following a stint as an English teacher and time working as a broadcast journalist and U.S. Senate staffer, Judy has spent more than 40 years as a nonprofit professional.

She set up and led communal and volunteer organizations in America and Israel.

In addition, she ran her own consultancy in nonprofit fundraising and strategic planning.

Most recently, she was the Director of the National Council of Jewish Women/New York Section. Prior to her arrival in Modiin ("actually, Aliyah Gimmel for us," says Judy), she served as the Director of Administration for Development for the Einstein College of Medicine in New York.

She and husband Bob are retired and divide their time between New York and Modiin, home to their two children and (soon to be five) grandchildren.

Linda Slutzky

Though new to ESRA, Linda is a long-time Israeli resident having made aliyah from Wyoming with husband Dr. Gerald (Jerry) Slutzky more than 40 years ago.

They lived in Jerusalem but in 2005 moved to Modiin. All three of their children, and all nine grandchildren, live in the city.

After making aliyah, Linda began working for the American Embassy's Center in Jerusalem – the Embassy's public diplomacy department, which works to foster strong relationships with Israeli government, academic, and NGO institutions.

This gave her a deep appreciation for the strong ties between the U.S. and Israel.

In 2017, she retired as Deputy Director, and "now looks forward to applying her experience to her future efforts on behalf of ESRA Modiin."
